Question 1 : Define thermodynamics System.

Answer : System :
It is define as the finite (prescribed) area or region in space upon which attention is concentrated in the analysis of a problem as shown in fig. 1.
It is of three types:
1. Closed system
2. Open system.
3. Isolated system.

Question 2 : Define thermodynamics Surroundings.

Answer : surroundings :
it is defined as “ Every thing external to the system is called surrounding or environment” as shown in fig. 1.

Question 3 : Define the thermodynamics Boundary.

Answer : Boundary : The thermodynamic system and surrounding are separated by an envelope is called boundary of the system as shown in fig. 1. It may be real or imaginary and may also be change the shape, volume, position or direction relative to the observer.

Question 4 : Define Closed System with diagram.

Answer : Closed System :
It is that type of system in which “Mass” is not allowed to across the system boundary ie It is constant with in the system boundary, but “Energy” is allowed to transfer into or out of the system boundary. As shown in fig. 2.
Examples are:
1. A certain amount of gas in a cylinder bounded by a piston constitutes a Closed system.
2. Pressure Cooker.

Question 5 : Define the Open System with diagram.

Answer : Open System :
It is that type of system in which “Mass” as well as “Energy” are allowed to across the system boundary. As shown in fig. 3. Most of the engineering devices are generally behave like open system.
Examples are:
1. Boiler
2. Air Compressor.

Question 6 : Define Isolated System with diagram.

Answer : Isolated System :
It is that type of system in which neither “Mass” nor “Energy” is allowed to across the system boundary. In this there is no interaction between the system and surrounding. In this system and surrounding are considered together. As shown in fig. 4.
For Examples:
1. Universe
2. Thermos flask.
